N-body Data Interchange Format
This e-mail exploder serves as a
forum to discuss if particle
pushers (N-body, SPH, PM, P3M etc.) need a format by which they can
interchange their data, and if so, which one.
Mailing list
The email address
nbody__do-not-use-for-spam__@astro.umd.edu
can be used to send and reply your thoughts about the data interchange
format to. All mail will be
archived and
accessible with the usual browsers.
Send mail to me ( teuben@astro.umd.edu ), if you

this list.
I've not automated neither of these two
procedures, so it may take more than a few minutes to get this
established.
Some background
-
NEMO: A Stellar Dynamics Toolbox ,
by Teuben (1994, PASJ, xxx, yyy) overviews the current state of
NEMO
and introduces a proposal to use
FITS as a vehicle to interchange and archive NBODY data.
A gzip compressed
postscript version
of this paper is also available. The full proposal, in DRAFT form,
is also available in postscript format.
-
The QUESTIONNAIRE , as presented
at the RENO (july 1994) workshop where we celebrated Sverre
Aaarseth's 60th birthday. The results of this QUESTIONNAIRE
were presented at the end of the meeting, and will be published
here shortly.
-
The
Sci.Data.Formats FAQ discussion contains an overview of
a number of scientific data formats in common use (FITS, HDF,
netCDF etc.).
- ADASS (1994) paper .
In preparation . A sample of the
WWW poster is available.
- An
alternative proposal, using HDF, is being worked on by
Greg Bryan. Obviously we have to agree on only one format.
- BABEL:
how the Molecular Dynamics collegues have solved it.
Archive
In the course of the discussion we plan to maintain a small archive
(currently limited by diskspace) where examples of personal as well
as standardized formats will be archived.
