Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 15:19:48 -0700 From: Dave De Young Subject: Aspen Workshop Dear Colleague; We wish to draw your attention to a forthcoming workshop at the Aspen Center for Physics this summer. Entitled "New Astrophysics and Cosmology with a Virtual Observatory", this workshop will focus on the new astrophysical problems that can be addressed through the unique facilities offered by a Virtual Observatory. The three areas of emphasis will be on new "observing" campaigns enabled by the VO, new integrations of large scale theoretical computations with observations using the capabilities of a Virtual Observatory, and the design of new surveys and amalgamations of databases that can be incorporated into the Virtual Observatory. The emphasis in this workshop will be on the scientific applications of the VO, with less emphasis on technical and implementation issues. Because of your interest in these topics, we urge to you consider attending this workshop, which will be held from May 27 to June 10 at the Aspen Center for Physics. Concurrent with this workshop will be a related workshop entitled "Science with Wide-Field Survey Telescopes". Time is of the essence because applications to the Aspen Center for Physics are due 1 FEBRUARY 2001. Even if you are not certain that you will be able to attend, we urge you to submit your application at this time. Applications can be submitted electronically to the ACP website, which is http://www.aspenphys.org. More information about the Physics Center can be found at this site. Please relay this message to others you feel may be interested. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact any us. We hope to see you in Aspen.
